This movie is flat out wonderful.
Directed by acclaimed French filmmaker Céline Sciamma, (Portrait of a Lady on Fire) this film explores the complexity of mother–daughter relationships and the complex web of connections that entwine generations across time.
Following the death of her beloved grandmother, 8-year-old Nelly helps her parents clean out her mother’s childhood home. She explores the house and surrounding woods, where her mum Marion used to play as a child.
Overwhelmed by grief, Marion leaves Nelly alone with her dad. That’s when Nelly meets a mysterious yet somehow familiar girl of her age, in the woods. Her name is also Marion and the pair form an uncanny bond.
Céline Sciamma’s follow-up to Portrait of a Lady on Fire and Tomboy is an evocative and magical tale of mothers and daughters.
Selected for the Berlinale 2021, winner of the Audience Award at the San Sebastián International Film Festival and rated number 3 in The Guardian’s 50 Best Films of 2021 in the UK.
"Petite Maman is a little slice of cinematic heaven. C’est vraiment magnifique." Review
" Céline Sciama’s follow up to Portrait of a Lady on Fire exemplifies the power of short, but emotionally satisfying storytelling without ever sacrificing poignant observation in the process."
